Bring Sanity Back to the GOP

Make them fear us in the primaries

As the second impeachment trial of ex-president Donald Trump unfolds, it seems inevitable that the threshold to convict, 67 votes in the U.S. Senate, will not be reached. Despite a meticulously crafted, airtight case presented by the House prosecution team, a number of Republican senators will ignore the evidence, seemingly out of loyalty to the ex-president.

Really, though, they will vote to acquit for a more basic reason: they fear a backlash from Trump-loyal voters if they choose to convict the former president. Sadly, they fear being kicked out of office if they pursue the evidence to its logical conclusion, that Trump should be convicted and never again allowed to run for federal office.

This is a corruption of spirit on their part. Even though there is life after Congress, even though these men and women have options for continuing to ensure their livelihood, they don’t want to lose the salary, perks and prestige that come with their office. Maybe they don’t want to end their congressional careers as “losers,” as Trump might say. In any event, they are willing to trade their greatest asset, integrity, for far lesser prizes.

It’s hard to believe any of them want to keep the keys to their party in Trump’s hands for the next decade or more. He has made the party a laughingstock…
